F.A. Cup 1963 - 64
Rochdale (A)

Action from the F.A. Cup 1st Round match played at Spotland on the 18th November 1963.

Chorley went out of the F.A. Cup after losing 2-1, but it was an heartbreaking exit for the Magpies, and a bitter disappointment for the hundreds of Chorley supporters who had travelled to the game.

After just 4 minutes Chorley captain Arthur Rowley crumbled to the ground clutching his face after a colliding with a team mate. The referee waved play on and the Chorley players seemed in a state of confusion when Rochdale right winger Cairns floated a harmless looking cross into the box.

Peter Vipham grasped the ball but was bundled over the line by Watson and the referee signalled a goal.

As the cheers of the home fans died down, Rowley was taken from the field on a stretcher, and it looked like being the end for the Magpies. But Rowley returned to the field and this sparked a revival for Chorley.

Chorley fought like tigers and after 39 minutes equalised courtesy of a Wroth goal, the first the home side had conceded in five matches.

The second half saw Chorley gain a firm grip on the game and it looked as though the game was heading for a draw, but with only 6 minutes remaining a rocket drive from 30 yards by Storf was parried by Vipham and Richardson tapped the ball into an empty net.
